Premium Streaming Services' sound quality (Spotify etc)

Post by BEclash on Sat Nov 15, 2014 5:27 pm

Hello everybody.
Spotify states that streams 320kbps to PREMIUM users
I was curious what's your opinion on sound quality from services like this.

Is it worth subscribing?

this may sound silly, but i don't use services like spotify for "ethical" reasons. i know of too many musicians who feel screwed by their royalty structure to support them. i realize this doesn't address your question but felt the need to speak up.

Aside the 'ethical' reasons brought up by JAM there are a few 'hifi' audio streaming services:

Tidal
Deezer - see their Deezer Elite offering
Pono (needs their Pono Player I think...)
qobuz

Also, for purchasing hi-res digital files, you can check out:
HDtracks
Naim Label
Bowers & Wilkins Society of Sound

A link to a good article on everything hi-res audio published in October 2014:

I use Spotify for 90% of the time. It is not in cd quality, but it's sound good enough for me.  (I have only taken the first steps to real hifi.) The plus side is the very big catalogue.

On Spotify see: http://www.whathifi.com/spotify/review

The ethical discussion is not an easy one.  The whole royalty system wordwide is not good. Spotify doesn’t make it worse in my opinion.

if millions of people listen to millions of plays on spotify instead of buying the artist's music, then it certainly does make it worse. people used to listen to "free" terrestrial radio but since they don't have control over the song selection in that medium, they used radio to discover music and then went out and bought albums so they could play that music whenever they wanted to hear it. now, instead of buying the artist's music, people click a song on spotify whenever they want to hear it, and the artist gets a royalty payment of between 0.006 cents and 0.0084 cents per play.
