Portable High-Resolution Player

Post by HC on Sun Sep 14, 2014 6:08 pm

I first brought up this topic on my FB page, but I think that this Forum is exactly the right medium for further discussion. So I'm porting your comments and suggestions here.

Anyway. So I've been thinking about a portable high-resolution player for a while. Something I can use instead of my iPod and its super cheap DAC on the go, and something that would at least play lossless files at 24/96 and perhaps have a swappable storage (mini SD?). Here are a few candidates, please drop your thoughts.

  • Sony A17 - $299 (coming soon)
  • Beyerdynamic A200p - $299 (specs)
  • FiiO X5 - $350
  • iBasso DX90 - $419 (review)
  • Astell & Kern AK100 - $529
  • HiFiMan HM-901 - $1000
  • Astell & Kern AK240 - $2500!

Most of these players have a get a great review when it comes to sound, but then break down due to crashing firmware and clunky design. So should I trade in quality sonic output for a frustrating user interface experience and very buggy software?

OK. So I just ordered the Beyerdynamic A200p, which appears to be a DAC that can interface with an iPod via the lightning cable. I'll keep you posted and let you know how it sounds when it arrives... I may even write up a review Wink

Looking forward to review... having flacs at work would be nice. Currently use an iPod and semi-decent Sony dock.

I'm still happily using a Cowon S9 (which supports wav and FLAC) that I now have for about five years. I had to fix the broken power switch last year, so it probably won't last a whole lot longer. I'm also looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the Beyerdynamic A200p, HC.

So I don't have a full review ready (yet), but so far really enjoying the A200p! The sound is immediately warmer and the stage is definitely wider. There's also a much better separation of individual instruments, and it's just overall a lighter feel, while the bass is absolutely stronger. I have it actually going through my headphone tube amp on top of it, but it very nicely pairs with my Beyerdynamic DT 770Pros, which I have reviewed two years ago here:

So yes, very happy with it! Definitely worth the money!
